Hi, I’m Nev.

I’m an educator and entrepreneur with more than two decades of experience in English language teaching and teacher training. I created and continue to manage an international TEFL/TESOL certification program used by teachers around the world.

But education is only one part of my life.

I write, travel, play music, read, and walk long distances. I have made pilgrimages across Europe and Asia, including a 3,109-kilometer journey on foot from Prague to the Atlantic Ocean. Along the way, I have become increasingly interested in the places people inhabit, the languages they speak, the cultures they create, and the reasons people do the things they do.

This site is where those interests come together.

What You’ll Find Here

The blog covers the subjects that continue to interest me: travel, culture, language, education, long-distance walking, and the observations that emerge from spending time in unfamiliar places.

Some stories begin on a trail. Others begin in a classroom, a university city, a border crossing, or an unexpected conversation. Some are practical; others are simply things I find worth thinking about.

I don’t publish to a fixed schedule, and updates will be irregular. My work, travels, and other commitments mean that I write when I have the time – and, more importantly, when I have something I genuinely want to say.

This is not a site built around constant updates or a publishing schedule.

It is a place for occasional, considered writing.

When I have something worth sharing, I’ll write.

I’m Nev

Once in a generation, a man comes along who changes everything. Neville David Thomas (Nev) is not that man. He does, however, have a personal website, which is probably enough for now.

Nev is an entrepreneur from Southern England with more than 20 years of experience creating, managing and marketing online and onsite TEFL/TESOL certification programs. He moved to Prague when he was 25 and, despite the best efforts of his English family and friends to get him to move back, has called the city home ever since.

Outside of business, Nev enjoys playing the guitar and piano, reading classic literature and 5th-century BCE Greek comedy, walking, writing and traveling. He is also the author of a published novel, written under a pseudonym, and has made numerous pilgrimages, the longest being a 3,109-kilometer walk from Prague to the Atlantic Ocean.

Nev has traveled extensively across Europe, Southeast Asia and South America. Cairo, Cape Town, Havana, Jerusalem and New York are also among his favorite haunts, although the definition of a “favorite haunt” becomes increasingly questionable when the places are thousands of miles apart.

An alumnus of Westminster College, Oxford, Nev has accumulated a somewhat unconventional collection of experiences over the years, along with an ongoing, if occasionally unsuccessful, attempt to understand why people do the things they do.

His English family and friends have never quite gotten used to his preference for writing in American English, but they have learned to live with it. You can get in touch with Nev via this website’s Contact page.
